The McCusker Alzheimer's Research Foundation Inc is bringing to Perth, Western Australia leading international scientists to highlight the latest advances in Lifestyle Approaches for the Prevention of Alzheimer's disease (LAPAD).

The aim of the conference is to discuss

  1. the latest advances in diet and lifestyle approaches for the prevention of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD);
  2. hormonal therapies;
  3. emerging novel technologies for measuring biomarkers of MCI/AD risk, and
  4. translation of this knowledge into practice in community-based interventions in Australia and internationally using a harmonised approach so that data can be easily compared or combined.

This conference provides a forum for eminent scientists from all over the world, who are at the cutting edge of expertise in these fields, to converge with the objective of gaining a deeper understanding of the key challenges faced in implementing diet/lifestyle and hormone therapy interventions in population subsets at risk of developing dementia. In addition, discussions will consider the advantages and limitations of emerging technologies used to measure established and novel risk biomarkers based on a deeper understanding of the biology of the neurodegenerative process that leads to MCI/AD.

LAPAD is of particular importance in the current research climate given that the focus has now shifted from understanding the pathology of MCI/AD and its diagnosis to primary prevention. This conference will galvanise efforts to implement community-based intervention strategies and validate the use of minimally invasive diagnostics for MCI/AD progression or reversal.
